The very step that is required in the process of making essential oils is to build a still, which is used for distilling essential oil. Once the still is made, one needs to harvest raw material. It is essential to harvest the plant at the right time, after some research. Plants that are not crushed or powdered are best to use. The plant material to be used is to be dried, as it reduces the quantity of oil in each plant but increases the yield per batch. Direct sunlight should be avoided at the time of drying.

The clean water should be added to the still. In case of manufactured still, the direction written on it should be followed. The quantity of water should be sufficient to complete the distillation. The plant material should be added tightly in the still. It should not be chopped or cut, as it can cause loss of oils.

After the plant is put into the still, it should be closed and water should be boiled to release Essential Oils. Many plants release their oils at 100 degree Celsius. Still should be kept under observation, as it should not run out of water. In case of longer distillation, water should be changed.

After the completion of distillation, oil should be filtered through clean and dry cheese cloth. Dust or detergent residue can pollute the oil.

Quickly pour the oil into a contained and store it in cool, dark place. These oils should be kept in dark glass bottle or stainless steel containers. The distilled water, so called hydrosols are usable. If not, they can be poured into the still for the next batch.

Steam distillation is believed to be a better means. The water is boiled in a separate retort and then pumped into the retort containing plant material. This means improves upon the quality. The quantity of oil extracted may vary from plant to plant.
Contaminants should be kept at bay at the time of distillation as they can affect their quality. These essential oils are highly concentrated and hence, needs to be diluted with carrier oil before usage.
